All the music for this sound visualization film was created with electronic instruments Helliwell designed, built and played.

The signals from keyboard and wah wah, bass keyboard, drum machine and tone generator, were in turn fed into a specially modified TV monitor, so that the waveform for each component of the music is made visible.

Ian has produced music, super-8 films, electronic instruments, cinema and music programs and light-show projections for concerts and club nights.

He has made over 50 short experimental films since the early 1990’s; many have been screened at festivals across Europe, USA, and Japan, and Ian has been a short film competition jury member at festivals in Norway and Germany.

Years of experimentation with building and modifying 9v circuitry, has led to the development of his unique series of Hellitron tone generators, used to make the soundtracks to all his super-8 films.

In 2007 he designed and built an analogue synth, the Hellisizer 2000, and during 2008/09 he has been making a series for radio called "The Tone Generation", which traces the early development of electronic music across the world.
