Daniel Carvalho has a background in molecular biology, having worked with DNA and protein structure in Brazil and the US.
In the year 2000, he started working with his wife Marcela Carvalho on experimental animation, and later, on audiovisual. Their first experimental animated short Just Motion was selected for the 2004 Anima Mundi International Animation Festival, and their audiovisual work Out_flow Part I was selected for the Independent Exposure 2007 and for the 2007 Optronica Festival.
He became part of the the art collective Altera in 2011, along with Marcela and his oldest son José Santos. Altera works with Dynamic Paintings (video) and Sequential Art (print) in a way that makes them intrinsically connected. They are currently developing a project on water dynamics. The Water project has generated so far three audiovisual works: Refluir, Outflow and Rheotaxis. Each work brings focus to different aspects of water dynamics and has already been selected for screening in international exhibitions.
