The art of moving images is much older than cinematography.

 

When in the year 1832 Austrian scientist Simon von Stampfer presented his invention, the “Stroboscopic Wheel”, his starting point was -probably to the surprise of some- abstract images! (...) The starting point for the first “abstract films” on the stroboscope was an irritating optical phenomenon experienced in actuality, and Stampfer used abstraction to help understand it. Although his approach is scientific and not artistic, the results do have a high aesthetic value, and at least, they “look like art”...
