Color + Modulation #7
5’31’’ · color · drawing, cgi, scratch · 1997-2006 · Portland·OR, USA
Color + Modulation is an alluring collection of eight 16mm films that have been painstakingly hand painted frame-by-frame and digitally manipulated on a desktop computer - creating an optically smooth ambient experience. Working with acrylic & metallic paints as well as with a pallet of permanent ink pens and spray paint canisters this film project took 7 years to complete. Described as both visually stunning and atmospherically beautiful, Color + Modulation transforms a television or video screen into an abstract canvas full of playful motion and smooth explosions of color and shape.

In Support of Living (Toronto·ON, Canada) is a music collective headed by Brad Ketchen of Hollowphonic and features a revolving door of musicians. Beats, drones, life.

He learned to animate by accident. He was hired to rotoscope explosions on large paper, so he spent hours and hours behind a black curtain tracing mattes around explosions frame by frame. After seeing dozens of explosions this way, he understood how to animate them.
He grew into an effects animator, added water, lightning, fire, shadows and bubbles to his repertoire and worked freelance on the fringes of Hollywood during the 80's and 90's.
He worked on the first 3 Star Wars films, also Airplane!, TRON, Beetle Juice, Highlander, among many others. He also made commercials for cigarettes, raisins and Michael Jackson, and directed a music video for the Beastie Boys.
Now he makes illustrations for the National Park Service. To him, animation is for fun only.

Fläche3
5’54’’ · cgi, video comp. · b&w · 2009 · Bremen, Germany
Fläche3 is an audiovisual real-time composition based on white circles on a plain black background. The circles are arranged on a fixed, invisible, rectangular grid of 44 x 44 center points. Their radii are modulated by data from sound analysis, such that organic patterns emerge in parallel with the music. The characteristic, quasi-spatial formality comes from a particular random function (Perlin noise). The movements are the result of both the sound analysis and live manipulation via knob controller.

Gold thinkings

A cluster of thousands of dots on a digital canvas. On certain days I’m in a particular kind of mood where I can create something much lighter or much heavier, something much smaller or much bigger than what I usually do. When I work on a piece, I must convey all of me. “All my pieces are like layers in a space ’continuum’; their duration is that of my own life” (paraphrasing Robert Motherwell)
Applied tool: Processing. Recorded in real time and later rendered with Camtasia Studio, including the title.

What comes most naturally to Nikka is being among machines: she plays and experiments with them with such familiarity and ease that she seems to have been born for it. She mirrors them, transmitting to the audience a complex mixture of sounds, rhythms and seemingly melancholic sensations, but with a strong character.

Wilfried Jentzsch's "Dream of B" music is like a Tsunami. It invades the listener in an inescapable way. But it also brings about a release, as if, after that powerful invasion, one were left cleansed, alive. The film attempts to make that experience visible, without any anecdotal means. It explores the “poetic” space that can/should exist "between" images and sound, a space that can be flattened/crushed so easily, or rendered irrelevant (if stretched out too much).

The London underground is powered by miles and miles of electrical cable and rail. All for the rapid transport of millions of people. As I rode along, I imagined myself as an electron racing my way to what ever destination. I turned my line of sight perpendicular so to imagine being on the actual journey, through the cables and on the Rails. To feel the distance and the material.

Experimental video produced by capturing live real-time visuals. The technique is based on the video signal’s deconstruction through a series of video feedbacks. The mixer outputs the signal to input it again via another channel; it outputs it again through another channel, and inputs it back through another channel… thus creating a small set of serial feedback loops, which builds up the dot-line imagery that you see on the video.
Soundtrack by Filastine
Deeply involved in the anti-globalization movement, his Infernal Noise Brigade (a 20-member band) set the beat to the anti-WTO protests in Seattle, as it left no questions about Grey Filastine’s political opinion. Based in Barcelona and internationally acclaimed, Filastine mixes most complex styles without any difficulty, taking the street-music to the most inhospitable corners of the world. Resourceful electronic music and a clear inclination towards percussion and ethnical sounds allow him to mix Bollywood, rhythms from the Balkan countries, breakcore and hip-hop… and get away with it.
